On the day of November 1st 1961, this Scout II rocket named the RM-90 Blue lifted off from Cape Canaveral from launch pad 18a. This launch pad is no longer in service and was demolished after the final launch which occurred on June 9th, 1965.
At Vintage Space, we are not biased only to successful or legendary launches. We are not afraid to reveal that this specific launch failed after lift off. Did you know that the Scout was the largest sounding rocket during the 1960s? Of course the V2 has entered the chat! But thats a story for another day. By the way, while this launched, people used shavers like the one on the left before going to work at the Cape.
The Scout II rocket was not the only vintage spaceflight rocket to launch from pad 18A. The first ever launch at this facility was actually the Viking rocket. This occurred in 1965 on the 8th of December. Did you know there was also a sister pad called pad 18B?
Of course, the most infamous rocket the Air Force used here was the Vanguard rocket. Shown here on the right, this four stage beast was the flagship vehicle to try and place the first American satellite into orbit to beat the Soviets. And this rocket was not without its follies. Learn more here about its famous bleeping satellite incident.
