1964 In Space Nostalgia

On March 18, 1964, the first manned mission of the Gemini program was launched by the United States, with astronauts Virgil "Gus" Grissom and John Young aboard the Gemini 3 spacecraft.

 

On April 8, 1964, the Soviet Union launched the Voskhod 1 spacecraft, which became the first spacecraft to carry a multi-person crew (three cosmonauts) into orbit.

 

On July 10, 1964, the Mariner 4 spacecraft became the first spacecraft to fly by Mars and send back close-up images of the planet's surface.

 

On October 12, 1964, the Voskhod 2 mission was launched by the Soviet Union, with cosmonauts Alexei Leonov and Pavel Belyayev aboard. Leonov became the first person to conduct a spacewalk, spending 12 minutes outside the spacecraft.

 

Overall, 1964 was another year of significant achievements and milestones in spaceflight, with both the United States and the Soviet Union continuing to make progress in their respective space programs.
